Abstract :
A singlemode fibre packaged transmitter and receiver, with no thermoelectric coolers, operating at 1.24 Gbit/s with bit error rates below 10-11 over a wide temperature range from -40°C to 125°C is presented. This link operates at 1 μm wavelength. The mean time between failure of the laser diode in the transmitter at 125°C and 10 mW of power is 2.5×106 h. This is the first report of such a long lifetime for laser diodes operating at this elevated temperature and output power level
