Abstract :
The conceptual design of the 100-MJ SMES (superconducting magnetic energy storage) test facility is described. The facility´s rated steady conditions correspond to a peak current of 5 kA in the winding, which is fully stabilized at a 4-T field and a 50-MJ capacitance, and to a converter power of 20 MW. Under forced conditions (1 h) the peak current rises to 7.1 kA and 5.6 T (a partially stabilized winding) at a stored energy of 100 MJ and a converter power of 30 MW. The winding is made from a multistrand transposed cable (Nb-Ti+Cu)
