Abstract :
Whereas today´s basic research can seed tomorrow´s technology, just which research will bear useful fruit is not always evident. Breakthroughs in laser science and solid-state physics often find applications immediately, but the technical potential of discoveries in some areas of basic science can be less apparent. This paper describes recent technological advances in the field of basic science. Topics covered include: a new state of matter which hints at wide applications; doped polymers which yield many electronic devices; holography which stores data in three-dimensions; and how a lack of inversion could be good for UV and X-ray lasers.
