Abstract :
The properties of the fundamental guided mode in planar waveguides having a Gaussian index profile are derived by using an analytical fit to the numerical results obtained from exact solutions. The developed expression for each property has the form of a simple power series which affords improved accuracy when compared to the results obtained from approximate analytical solutions reported to date. The technique proposed here is relatively simple and can be readily extended to apply to the analysis of waveguides having other index profiles.
