Abstract :
In Japan, more than half of the line faults are caused by lightning, and 20 to 30 percent of them are double-circuit faults. To reduce the lightning flashover faults on lines, various methods have been applied. However, they have not sufficiently prevented flashover faults. In the meantime, the application of line arresters incorporating zinc oxide elements has drawn attention in recent years. Certainly, the idea of applying arresters to lines has existed for a long time, but there have been various problems to solve concerning their durability and reliability under severe usage conditions, including cost.<>
