Thyristor protection for series capacitors in an arc furnace plant

Abstract :
An advanced solution for the bypass protection of a series compensation system in arc furnace plants is presented in this paper. It is based on high-power light triggered thyristors (LTTs). In this paper, after a description of the application, the thyristor bypass design is presented with the analyses of the most peculiar aspects and interesting technological solutions. The paper also reports some experimental results and the comparison with the waveforms obtained by the numerical simulations.
