Abstract
The conceptual approach to EMC design is discussed, and the various methods of practical implementation of an EMC control policy are presented. Design for EMC is an issue which has rapidly increased in importance in recent years, driven by legal, reliability and commercial demands. The move to include EMC characteristics as an integral element of the design process has been evident even in lower product cost sectors where the significant advantages are now apparent. The major progress in design has been in the application of control strategies that draw together basic design rules, experience with previous products and increasingly, predictive behaviour modelling. Many of the tried and tested techniques, allied to good information of preliminary test data, can be applied effectively to the design process with excellent results, and simulation for low frequency applications has proved its value in some applications. The current approach to design for EMC still relies on many traditional control measures, but mathematical modelling for specific elemental characterisation is likely to emerge as a sound support tool in the future
