Abstract :
Magnetic memories employ magnetic particles, the properties of which vary considerably from one to another. Their hysteresis properties depend not only on the properties of their constituent materials but also on their morphologies and states of perfection. The probabilities of occurrence of imperfections and their probable influences on the magnetic properties of particles are reviewed in terms of available theory, and deductions are made of relevant magnitudes using published measurements. Estimates are made for necessary improvements to particle perfection for low error rates in a potential future storage application.
