Abstract
While the American HDTV standards process thus seems to be nearing a successful conclusion, several important policy issues remain to be resolved by the US government. Under objective technical criteria formulated by an all-industry Advisory Committee on Advanced Television Service four digital systems were chosen. Each of the digital systems, however, had shortcomings which required further technical refinements. These systems were eventually combined into a single so-called Grand Alliance system
