Abstract :
Sleep-wake cycle activity monitoring or actigraphy is an essential tool in sleep research and sleep medicine. In this paper, we investigated the clinical validation of a novel wrist actigraph mobile health device incorporating the proportional integration mode (PIM) algorithm. Thirty-three subjects underwent polysomnography (PSG) exams and concurrent wrist actigraphy during an overnight study evaluating and comparing sleep efficiency between the two modalities. The mean difference in sleep efficiency between the two methods was 2.0%. We observed moderately favorable correlations between total sleep duration (R=0.51) and sleep efficiencies (R=0.50) measured by the PSG and PIM-algorithmic approaches (p<;0.01). The results support the role of our consumer based mobile health approach for evaluating sleep patterns and estimating sleep efficiency outside the clinic.
