Abstract
The evolution of user interface design from first-stage element management systems to potential third-stage service management systems is reviewed. Requirements for user interface design are discussed. It is argued that network and service management systems for synchronous optical networks (SONETs) will benefit from the object-oriented programming approaches now being popularized in graphical windowed interfaces.<>
