Abstract :
Several kinds of high temperature superconducting (HTS) power cables have already been developed and evaluated for use in the utility power network. The 22.9 kV/50 MVA class HTS power cable system has been developed and tested in South Korea. The HTS Power cable system has to satisfy the fault currents characteristics of the utility power network in order to protect the cable itself from the fault current. However, several kinds of simulation, which analyse the transient phenomena of HTS power cable itself, are basically required before installation, as the impedance level of HTS power cable is dramatically changed in case of quench at fault current condition. In this paper, authors propose a real-time simulation method which incorporates a real miniaturized HTS power cables into the simulated 22.9 kV utility power network system using real time digital simulator (RTDS). For the simulation analysis, the test samples of five types of miniaturized HTS power cables were actually manufactured, and the transient phenomenon of HTS power cable system was analysed in the simulated utility power network.
