Abstract
This special issue represents a sampling of papers presented at the URSI Commission F. Symposium on Signature Problems in MicrowaveRemoteSensing of the Surface of the Earth, January 5-8, 1981. This meeting, held at the University of Kansas, represented a high point in an effort for many years to enhance the international status and representation of scientists and engineers in microwave remote sensing. The meeting more than achieved these goals through the presentation of more than 63 papers and excellent participation from fourteen countries. There will be a companion issue of the Transcriptions on Ocean Engineering edited by Dick Moore of the University of Kansas on the oceans related papers presented at the meeting. The author feels that the Microwave Remote Sensing community owes a debt of gratitude to Dick Moore and his colleagues at the University of Kansas for their persistent and unselfish efforts on our behalf over the last decade of remote sensing activities, and particularly for the organization and hosting of this excellent meeting.
