Abstract :
A simple full-duplex radio-on-fiber system using a single light source is described. A base station (BS) is simplified by giving it no local light or RF sources. The optical carrier for the uplink is sent along with the downlink optical signal to a remote BS. It is looped back to the central station after being modulated with an uplink RF signal. Fiber-optic full-duplex transmission of 60-GHz-band 155.52-Mb/s downlink and uplink signals over 25-km-long standard single-mode fibers is experimentally demonstrated and bit error rates of 10-9 for both links were achieved without any serious fiber dispersion due to the optical single-sideband format. The configuration of the proposed system is simpler because one light source is shared by the downlink and uplinks.
