Abstract
A simple and uniform scheme for computing the open-loop characteristic (S-curve) of a decision-directed maximum-likelihood phase estimator is derived which can be applied in the same manner to M-ary phase-shift keying (MPSK) signals in general. Also, the slope of the S-curve in the stable equilibrium point is given in order to evaluate closed-loop parameters of the linearised model.
