Abstract
This paper presents the results of an investigation of radio interference during the uprating of a 115-kV substation to 230 kV using the initial buswork. Field measurements of radio noise were made: 1) before the uprating to document the pre-uprating conditions; 2) during the conversion process to determine what equipment modifications were necessary to reduce excessive corona; and, 3) after completion of the modifications and conversion to 230 kV. As far as the authors are aware, this effort represents one of the first documented conversions of a substation utilizing the existing substation hardware. As such, the field data and analysis in this paper represent unique resources for other utilities who may be contemplating similar station uprating projects.
