Abstract
Packet radio can be used by electric utilities to cammunicate substation alarm data, serving as a reliable and economic alternative to leased telephone circuits. This paper details the application, design and usage of such a system on existing company FM 2-Way radio voice channels. The recent availability of commercial packet radio modems, along with specialized computer software designed by the authors, is the cornerstone for this system. By utilizing computers with 16 point input or output ports, these units can also be used for packet radio control links.
