Abstract :
Portable and mobile applications require low power consumption in addition to high throughput to prolong battery life in a VLSI implementation. The authors propose a novel configuration of a low-power portable communications (PCS) device that promises improved performance over very noisy band-limited channels through the use of a feedback channel and digital signal processing techniques that have their origins in sigma-delta modulation. Comparisons with PCM using raised-cosine pulses illustrate the design tradeoffs.<>
