This story of the development of TRANSIT was written by one of the 1986 Pioneer Award Team. It is not intended to be a technical treatise; it is to give readers background on the approaches used during the development of the system. This also is, in essence, the talk given at the Pioneer Award Luncheon, NAECON, May 22, 1986 (Dayton, OH).
