  • Abstract
    The life and achievements of Joseph Clement (1779-1844) are discussed. It is shown that Clement was a highly respected member of the mechanical engineering community when Babbage first contacted him to work as a professional mechanic and draftsman on Babbage´s Difference Engine. Babbage actually delegated a large part of the responsibility of the design of the Difference Engine to Clement.<>
