Abstract
The state of the Fe ions in the dilute magnetic semiconductors Cd 0.97Fe0.03Te and Cd0.95Fe0.05Te has been determined using Mossbauer spectroscopy. The spectra show an evolution from a single line at 300 K to a sextet of broadened lines at 4.2 K. Analysis indicates that the iron is present as Fe2+ ions and that the six line spectrum at 4.2 K is not magnetic but is composed of three separate quadrupole doublets. These occur as the cubic symmetry of the Fe2+ site is removed by distortions caused by Fe substitution on neighbouring Cd sites
