Abstract :
The development of short-wavelength lasers is reviewed. Three pumping mechanisms have been demonstrated which produce lasing at wavelengths from 3 to 100 nm. These mechanisms include electron-collisional excitation, electron-ion recombination, and photo-excitation. Examples of X-ray lasers and future directions of the field are discussed
