Abstract
The four units of the Wehr-Hornberg pumped storage power station operated by Schluchseewerk AG were put into service at the end of 1976 [1]. The underground type power station is designed solely for day time operation. The complete design of the station encompassing both the mechanical and civil parts and the control concept was selected to ensure optimum power station operation and to achieve high availability, short start-up and changeover times, high operational reliability, high overall efficiency, easy operation and low maintenance requirements. Process computers were employed for the first time for fully automatic control of the units. The authors describe the concepts, the hierarchical control model and some details of the design
