Abstract
The performance and the sensitivity of the neural correlator based on integral pulse frequency modulation (IPFM) are analyzed. The performance of the neural correlator is evaluated and shown to match many psychophysical test results. The behavior of the neural coder is expressed in terms of a stochastic nonlinear law. An analytical optimality condition for the mean-spike firing rate is derived. Numerical comparison between optimal and neurophysiological values shows that natural systems meet the optimality condition
