Abstract :
The present status of coal conversion to oil and gas is discussed. Conservation and fuel substitution may well keep our oil demand constant; but, in view of declining domestic reserves, it will take heroic efforts just to keep our domestic production at present levels. The alternatives are oil sands, shale oil and coal conversion -- all technologies which require large investments and which have environmental problems
