Abstract :
`TAPE SUCKS,?? declared Dave Lipsey, writing in E&T back in March about his bad experiences with tapebased storage systems ?? in particular, tape systems based on the linear open-tape (LTO) standard. Lipsey, IS services and infrastructure manager at Ordnance Survey, told of how when backing up to tape, he was averaging 70 per cent backup success rate, which may mean a 60 per cent restore success rate. By moving to disk-based storage, Lipsey claimed to have archived 99 per cent backup success. Abandoning the unreliable and unpredictable tape backup for disk was a no-brainer.
