Abstract :
The applicability of a commercial microprocessor farm for reducing the large volume of data of a high-energy-physics experiment has been investigated. The idea is to give each processor one full event to treat independently from the other processors. The requirements that led to the choice of a commercial product are described, and the hardware is presented. Software aspects are also discussed, and some performance measurements of the systems software are presented. The system has been implemented and is now being used in the data-acquisition system of the Aleph experiment at CERN
