Abstract
The author maintains that software managers find staffing decisions difficult because they have never been trained to be successful in the interview and selection process. He reports the results of a series of informal interviews with about 30 managers and engineers regarding the traits software managers look for in the people they have working for them and the characteristics they want to see in job candidates (external or internal) for software-engineering and technician positions on their project teams.<>
