Abstract
This article explains the usefulness and versatility of point primitives for graphics, visualization, rendering, modeling, and animation. The observations and findings are based on more than 8 years of research in point-based graphics and on many discussions with key researchers in this rapidly developing field. This article is intended to provide both a critical analysis and an inspiration for researchers and developers
