Abstract
In order to process the increasing amounts of analog measurement data obtained by the newer Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems, new techniques of report-by- exception and process-by- exception have been developed. This paper provides fundamental experimental information regarding the dynamics (changes) and the statistics of the analog measurement data necessary to evaluate these techniques. The effects of sample period, deadband size, and input data types were analyzed; the results show a significant savings in communication and computer resource requirements over systems which report or process all data every sample period.
