Abstract :
Reports a high-performance FSK coherent optical communication system operating a 200 Mbit/s at a wavelength of 1.53 mu m. The received optical power needed to obtain a BER of 10-9 is equal to -57.2 dBm or 74 photons/bit, which is 1.7 dB from the shot noise limit. The result is obtained using monolithic frequency-tunable lasers and a high-sensitivity balanced photoreceiver.
