Abstract
This paper presents a method of accounting for the varying inductance and apparent resistance in the prediction of the performance of a chopper controlled DC series motor. The finite element technique is utilized to solve the electromagnetic field, at a cross section of the machine, in the time domain, taking eddy current and saturation effects into account. The rotational voltage is calculated and the incremental inductances are introduced and used for the calculation of currents; the torque is then calculated based on the Maxwell Stress Tensor in the air gap.
