  • Abstract
This paper addresses the problem of monitoring transient events on a power system. A digital Transient Recorder is described which is capable le of monitoring and recording transient fault data directly onto a magnetic storage media, in computer-readable eadable form. The Recorder provdes a mtuch more reliable and accurate means of analyzing fault data, compared to standard electromechanical recording techniques. ques. Pre-fault and post-fault waveform data can be reconstructed and analyzed. An absolute time reference (a satellite clock receiver) allows comparison of simultaneous recordings on the same time base. Field test data is presented which shows the utility of the Recorder in analyzing the operation of protection systems, and in detecting equipment failures or mal-functions.
