Abstract :
In recent years significant advances have been achieved in the design and development of under- ground transmission and distribution cables in terms of ampacities and operating voltages. Self-contained oil-filled cables and pipe type cables are the dominant designs in most countries for underground systems of 132 kV and above. They have been used at voltage levels up to 550 kV and cables for the 750 to 1200 kV range are now being considered. This paper presents a summary of the available literature on pipe-type cables which have superseded the self-contained oil- filled cables in the USA. The important design and operation parameters are described and the various computational methods used to determine electrical losses and ampacities are discussed.
