Abstract
The operation of the diaphragm is shown to be so involved as to make its development difficult with any treatment other than an empirical one. Measurements, however, can be made upon a diaphragm to determine its efficiency and to determine the optimum mass of the voice coil to be associated with it. With the voice coil mass so determined, a method is shown for selecting the voice coil diameter and the magnet dimensions to give a desired performance at a minimum cost. The design procedure is applicable not only to electrodynamic speakers but is of use also in the design of any device utilizing an electrically-driven vibramotive force.
