Abstract :
A new approach is proposed for the design of single-mode waveguides. The approach is based on expanding the waveguide core into an array of subwaveguides and maximizing the separation between these waveguides up to the point where the array is still supporting a single supermode. The results of numerical computations verify the possibility of designing the proposed waveguides with better combinations of modal size and modal power confinement.
