  • Abstract
The intense electromagnetic wave generated by a properly placed high altitude nuclear detonation would cause disruption of electrical service to a broad area. The anticipated effects of this wave on various portions of a "typical" utility system are discussed. A proposal is made to provide a judicious level of "hardening" to existing facilities and to update certain facets of the construction of future plants and substations.
