Abstract :
Some of the more recent advances in understanding the control of the human respiratory system are discussed, particularly as they relate to mathematical modeling of the system. A brief review of the anatomy and physiology is followed by a discussion of a number of tests used to elicit information about the system dynamics. Mathematical modeling of the respiratory control system is then discussed, beginning with the classic work of Grodins in 1954. Some dynamic tests which have been successfully simulated are presented. Finally, there is a discussion of several specific points which have been clarified as a result of model studies.
