Abstract :
The harmonic distortion caused by a solid state AC voltage controller of an induction motor drive is evaluated. A conventional shunt harmonic filter (SHF) for harmonic reduction for a group of such drives is compared with a harmonic blocking compensator (HBC). It is shown that the HBC is more efficient in harmonic reduction than the SHF, especially, with distorted supply voltage. Moreover, the designer has more control over the HBC than the SHF performance. The HBC, however, has a higher power rating than the SHF
