Abstract :
The results of tests on 800 kV toughened glass post insulators are presented and analytical study to define their dynamic behavior when associated with connections and a supporting chassis under extreme service conditions (earthquake, short-circuit) is described. The findings show that the performance of toughened glass post insulators under high-amplitude dynamic loads permits even the most stringent specifications to be satisfied with a high safety margin. Under forced vibrations, the acceleration at the top of the insulator necessary to cause breakage was 5.6 g (g=9.81 m/s2), which is at least three times larger than that required by specifications for Venezuela and the US West Coast
