Abstract :
The Cigre motor simulation circuit is used to perform comparative switching tests with modern technologies, i.e. SF6 and vacuum. The tests are aimed at comparing the overvoltage performance of medium-voltage circuit breakers in an accepted, standard circuit. The results are assessed in terms of the likely effects on main and interturn machine insulation. All types of switching devices tested generated acceptable levels of overvoltages due to simple current chopping in the circuit used. That is, the overvoltages generated were below the level at which motor insulation should be at risk. The phenomenon of multiple restriking was relatively frequently observed
