Measurements of optical transient attenuation losses and their effects on deployed optical systems in the British Telecom network

The results are described of experiments carried out to determine the effects of transient losses caused by working party operations on British Telecom´s current and future optical networks. Results show that even systems operating with 19 dB of optical margin above the nominal 10-9 bit error rate operating point can still be affected by transient attenuation losses
