  • Abstract
    The authors have transmitted data at 1 Gbit/s over singlemode fibre with a bit error rate (BER) of less than 10-11 using intensity modulated butt coupled VCSELs and direct detection. The laser-fibre coupling efficiency exceeds 90% for singlemode operation and the maximum power in the fibre is 0.5 mW. The power penalty for -10 dB feedback is as low as 1.5 dB
