Abstract :
In an orifice type gas blast interrupter a rather "quiet" arc section of about 10 mm length close to the vena contracta was dominant during thermal recovery, both in air and in SF6. For small dI/dt values, the associated power loss was only 1000 watts for air and 600 watts for SF6, which is close to an estimated laminar loss of 400 watts for air.
