Abstract :
The development of a current- limiting device (CLD) designed to reduce fault currents on a 145-kV transmission line is discussed. This CLD system consists of an electronic sensor that predicts the magnitude of a fault during the first 400 , is of its evolution, a fast switching system that opens in approximately 1 ms, and a large energy-absorbing resistor that is inserted into the line to limit the fault current when the switch opens. The prototype hardware performed successfully in the field during staged fault tests.
