Abstract
Basic aspects of design studies involved in the development of an optimized ±600 kV DC Pipe Cable are described. Materials studies, evaluating candidate insulating oils and papers, are presented, and results of breakdown tests on models summarized. Design parameters are reviewed, and a method described for development of an optimized cable. Brief comments are provided relating to the proposed laboratory test program, the newly-developed G & W DC terminal, and the subject of insulation coordination.
