Abstract :
It is proposed in the following to show on the basis of the area served by a South German utility how existing modern oil-fired power stations are capable of meeting the requirements of the changing power generation conditions in taking over specific functions in grid systems which make their continued operation appear desirable and necessary in the foreseeable future. Special problems of peak-shaving duty, cycling duty, stand-by duty, system control, rate of load changes and spinning reserve are explained with reference to the commercial operation of the Pleinting 2 unit (425 MW).
