Abstract
Significant savings in transmission investment can result from the application of ultra-high-speed circuit breakers and relays capable of clearing faults in one-cycle primary time or five-cycle backup time as compared to a three-cycle primary and eight-cycle backup times now obtainable from conventional schemes. Stability studies were made to establish and to evaluate the gain in power transfer over typical transmission systems when the fault duration times were reduced.
