Abstract :
Optoelectronics technology could bring in over $ 460 billion by 2013 according to the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA). This represents a compound annual growth rate of 9.5 % over the next 20 years. Computer and consumer products represent the largest markets but communications, the automotive industry, defense and aerospace will also contribute substantially. The impact will be even greater on the broadband information services and software enabled by optoelectronic communications and information storage. Display, optical communication, and optical storage appear to hold the greatest opportunities. For instance, displays are widespread in their use in electronic products from televisions, laptop computers, watches, telephones and automobiles. Thus, displays have enormous economic potential.<>
