Abstract :
Volumetric 3D displays are those in which physically three-dimensional images are generated within a display volume rather than upon a stationary surface. In many cases the display volume is created by the rapid rotation of a target screen and the images are created by addressing the screen with an electron or laser beam. When part of the screen lies at a very oblique angle to the beam, however, the image quality will suffer owing to imprecision in voxel placement and the elongation of the voxels themselves. The regions within which these effects are unacceptable are termed dead zones, and they are elucidated quantitatively for the optical system of a volumetric display prototype known as the Cathode Ray Sphere
